What Is Wi-Fi 7?

  1. Up To 320 MHz Of Flexible Bandwidth

The new standard for Wi-Fi is 802.11ax, also known as Wi-Fi 7. This latest version of Wi-Fi offers several benefits over the previous 802.11ac standard, including increased bandwidth, more non-overlapping channels, and improved power efficiency. One of the most significant improvements in Wi-Fi 7 is the increased bandwidth. The new standard supports up to 320 MHz of flexible bandwidth, compared to 80 MHz in 802.11ac. This will allow for much faster speeds and more reliable connections.

 

  1. 16 Spatial Streams MU-MIMO

The next generation of Wi-Fi, known as Wi-Fi 7, is set to deliver a number of technical innovations that will greatly improve the performance and efficiency of wireless networks. One of the most significant improvements will be the addition of 16 spatial streams, which will allow for much greater data throughput than the current 4-stream standard. Additionally, MU-MIMO will be supported, meaning that multiple devices can be served simultaneously without any decrease in performance. This is a major improvement over the current SU-MIMO technology which can only serve one device at a time. Finally, OFDMA will be used to further improve efficiency by allowing different devices to use different sub-channels within the overall channel. These technical innovations will result in a huge increase in performance and capacity for Wi-Fi 7 networks, making them ideal for high-density environments such as airports and stadiums.

 

  1. 4K-QAM

The 5th generation of Wi-Fi, also known as 802.11ac, was a big step forward in terms of speed and range. The next generation, Wi-Fi 7, is set to build on this success with a host of new technical innovations, including 4K-QAM. 4K-QAM is a new modulation technique that will quadruple the number of bits that can be transmitted per symbol. This will result in a significant increase in data rates, especially in congested environments where multiple devices are sharing the same channel. In addition to 4K-QAM, Wi-Fi 7 will also introduce 1024-QAM, which will double the data rate of 802.11ac. Together, these two modulation techniques will enable Wi-Fi 7 to achieve data rates of up to 10 Gbps in ideal conditions.

 

  1. Multi-RU & Preamble Puncturing

The Wi-Fi 7 standard will deliver a number of new technical innovations, including Multi-RU & Preamble Puncturing. Multi-RU (MIMO) will allow for more data to be transmitted simultaneously, increasing throughput and reducing latency. Preamble Puncturing will enable more efficient use of the available spectrum, resulting in increased speeds and capacity.

 

  1. Multi-Link Operation

One of the key features that will be added in 802.11ad is multi-link operation, which will allow multiple devices to connect to a single access point (AP) using multiple links. The multi-link operation will provide several benefits over the current single-link operation.

  • First, it will increase the data rate that can be achieved between the AP and the client devices. This is because each link can operate at its own data rate, so the total data rate will be the sum of the rates of all the links.
  • Second, it will reduce latency and jitter, because each link can be used independently to send and receive data.
  • Third, it will improve reliability, because if one link fails, the others can continue to operate.
  • Lastly, it will reduce power consumption, because each link can be turned off when not in use.

When Will Wi-Fi 7 Be Released & When Will Wi-Fi 7 Routers Be Available?

As of right now, there is no set release date for Wi-Fi 7. However, it is speculated that the draft 2.0 standard will be released in March 2022. Once the standard is released, manufacturers will then start releasing Wi-Fi 7 routers and other devices. So, it is likely that Wi-Fi 7 routers will be available to consumers sometime in 2020.
